“An excellent reference for those interested in journeys that forever changed the world; readers who dip in and out of the book will wish there were even more expeditions chronicled.”
Booklist, starred review
Extraordinary Expeditions is a reference book that examines the history of human exploration without the usual heroic-discovery mythology. It spans more than a millennium and ranges from all seven continents to the deep ocean and outer space, recovering lesser-known journeys and the people missing from standard accounts — indigenous navigators, non-European guides, women — to show that exploration is a universal human endeavour rather than a uniquely Western or male one. Each entry sets the historical context, traces the expedition, reckons with its legacies, and closes with further reading drawn deliberately from diverse authors.

Don’t have £75/$100 to shell out for a book? That’s okay: you can ask your local library to purchase it instead and check it out once it becomes available! All it takes is a library card. Search for your library’s name plus “suggest a purchase” and it’s usually the first result.
